Aboriginal Counselling Skills Certificate

Program description

The program provides counsellor training for individuals who presently work, volunteer, or who may wish to work or volunteer in an Aboriginal setting.

The program provides learners with a foundation of knowledge and skills requried to provide culturally appropriate counselling services to Aboriginal families and individuals.

It involves 346 contact hours, comprised of an orientation, nine required courses and two electives. Learners who successfully complete the program will have the capacity to respond effectively to the increasingly complex role of a counsellor in an Aboriginal setting of community.

While in the program, learners must be employed or hold a supervised and related volunteer position in a social service or comparable agency that is of sufficient duration to allow learners to practice skills and knowledge learned in their program.

Training Opportunities – Peguis and Fisher River

Red River College – Peguis – Fisher River Campus is offering two full-time programs beginning in January, 2012.

  • Early Childhood Education Diploma (2 Years) begins January 16, 2012 in Peguis First Nation
  • Health Care Aide Certificate (6 Months) begins January 9, 2011 in Fisher River

These programs will provide you with the skilss to work in established professinos in your home community. Each program is a combination of theory and practical training to ensure that you are able to meet the professional requirements of your chosen career.

Bachelor of Education/ After Degree Program

The Peguis School Board and Fisher River Cree Nation Education Authority in partnership with Brandon University’s Faculty of Education are in the process of developing a full-time teacher education program. The focus will be Early-Middle Years stream.

The program is seeking at least 30 applicants who are interested in the field of education.
Students will have the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Arts/ Education Degree. Students who are eligible for admission to Brandon University are encouraged to apply. Mature student status will also be considered in the enrolment process.
