Selinger Pays visit to Peguis
TODAY’S NDP WILL KEEP BUILDING FOR FAMILIES IN THE INTERLAKE
September 19, 2011 – (Peguis) Today’s NDP will resurface 20 kilometers of Highway 17 between Fisher Branch and Peguis. “Manitoba families deserve high quality roads, no matter where they live. That’s why we’ve invested more than $2 billion in our highways and bridges,” said Premier Greg Selinger. “We’ll keep on building for families in the Interlake.” The last time the PC’s were in government, increased the gas tax by 44% while slashing the highway budget. During the last election, Hugh McFadyen said he would take money out of highways in northern Manitoba so that he could spend more in southern Manitoba. Interlake families know that highways are too important to risk in the hands of Hugh McFadyen and the PCs. Campaign HQ – Jean-Marc Prevost: |

UWINNIPEG & PEGUIS FIRST NATION PARTNER TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE PLAN RELEASE – MONDAY, JULY 4, 2011 WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg and Peguis First Nation have entered a Memorandum of Collaboration (MOC) to establish a guiding framework to work collaboratively to develop, deliver, and assist in the implementation of a Land Acquisition Strategy. In 2007, the Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba, and Peguis First Nation settled the First Nation's Treaty Land Entitlement (TLE) Specific Claim that includes $64 million in financial compensation to resolve the claim. The TLE settlement also includes 111,756 acres of private land to purchase on a ‘willing seller willing buyer’ basis. This MOC will assist Peguis in progressively creating a sustainable strategy to ensure this claim benefits the Peguis community and will continue to assist the Peguis Nation in the future, financially and economically, to build a stronger Nation and community. “The TLE claim is one that was a long time coming and with this settlement we hope to benefit our community now and for generations to come,” said Peguis First Nation Chief Glenn Hudson. “This partnership will create a unique and progressive approach for purchasing land for TLE purposes that will take into consideration a number of key principles to create a sustainable plan to reach the goals of our TLE settlement.” |

Comprehensive Community Planning Michael and Judie Bopp of Four Worlds Centre for Development Learning conducted numerous community member interviews and compiled three (3) documents. “The Peguis Community Story” - community members, “The Youth Speak” - youth and “The Rapid Program Review” - department programs. The Comprehensive Community Planning Steering Committee would like the members of Peguis to read the Peguis Comprehensive Community Plan - Final Draft about the plans for the future of our community we live in. Your feedback is very important in making the community we live in “What we, as Peguis Band Members want it to be”. What is Comprehensive Community Planning (CCP) Once CCP starts, it doesn’t stop. It becomes a living part of our community life. We will need to keep on thinking, talking and acting together in order to guide our development process as it unfolds. The reason it’s called “comprehensive” is because it covers pretty much everything—all aspects of life: individual well-being (all people, all ages), families, community development, even issue of Peguis sovereignty and our relationship with other jurisdictions. Please submit your remarks, additions, deletions to: Peguis CCP Steering Committee |

PROVINCE INVESTS $5 MILLION TO HELP REBUILD PEGUIS ARENA
"A recreational complex is often the source of community pride and a gathering place for all ages," said Ashton. "Our government is pleased to be able to help ensure this important facility gets back up and running to provide a whole host of fun, healthy activities." The provincial contribution is estimated to be one-third of the total cost. The provincial funding will flow starting in 2012. The new arena will meet current recreational challenges left following a devastating fire that destroyed the old arena in 2007, said Ashton. "I am happy to be able to partner with the province on this new arena project. Peguis First Nation will see many benefits from this important new facility including community building, increased wellness for all ages, and safe and healthy activities for our youth. The community is grateful to see this much‑needed facility become a reality," said Peguis Chief Glenn Hudson. "The financial support from the province will help Peguis in their rebuilding effort," said Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Eric Robinson, minister responsible for sport, at a community event today. "We congratulate the community for coming together on this exciting project." The new two-storey arena will be 69,000 square feet in size and will feature: * a skating rink, In 2008, the province committed to funding of $500,000 for an energy-efficient ice plant for the arena. Ashton noted, the new arena will allow Peguis First Nation to repatriate its Junior B Hockey Team. The addition of a new arena would also allow the First Nation to bid on a Junior A team which would allow Peguis to compete with other First Nations such as Opaskwayak and Waywayseecappo in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. |
